Getting regular eye exams can help your child reach their full potential.

 

Experts say vision plays a vital role for children’s learning as it is responsible for approximately 80% of all learning during their first 12 years. In Australia, 1 in 5 children have undetected vision problems that can hinder their learning and development. Poor eyesight can negatively impact not just their academic performance but also their emotions, social skills and overall well-being. 

 

Even if your child has passed the brief visual screening test conducted at schools, it is still strongly recommended that they have a comprehensive eye exam with a trained optometrist. Most children will not express their visual problems because they just simply are not aware of the difference between good and bad vision. 

 

Common vision problems include:

  • Short-sightedness

  • Far-sightedness

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)

  • Strabismus (eye turn)

 

Signs your child may be experiencing vision problems:

  • Slipping grades

  • Holding books or any reading material too close or sitting close to the television

  • Headaches

  • Frequent blinking

  • Squinting
